Village Level: There are 6 Villages in Rensselaer County. Each village provides some services to residents but still falls under the jurisdiction of the Town (or Towns) in which it is located. Village residents vote in both Village and Town elections. Each village has a Board of Trustees, which consists of a Mayor and some number of Trustees.
Town Level: There are 14 Towns in Rensselaer County. Each Town is divided into Election Districts for voting purposes. Each town has a Town Council. The official website for each town provides information about elected officials, the Council meeting schedule, and election procedures.
City Level: There are two cities in Rensselaer County: Troy and Rensselaer. The City of Rensselaer has a Mayor and a Common Council. The Council has 6 members, one from each Ward of the City, and a President. The City of Troy has a Mayor and a City Council. The Council has a President and 6 Council members, one from each Council District. County Level: The County is governed by an Executive and a Legislature. There are 6 legislative districts in Rensselaer County. Each district is represented by one or more legislators, depending on the size of the district. The County Legislature meets monthly. There is a Public Forum one week prior to the monthly meeting at which the public can speak directly to the legislators. The County’s website includes a calendar of meetings, a list of legislators, and links to meeting agendas and minutes.

State Level: The Legislative branch of New York State government consists of the Senate and the Assembly. The entirety of Rensselaer County is within the 43rd State Senate District. The majority of Rensselaer County is represented by the 107th State Assembly District with a smaller portion within the 108th State Assembly District.

Federal Level: A portion of Rensselaer County is within the 19th Congressional District and a portion is within the 20th Congressional District.
